Men and Boys

These are the men and boys from the Albion Road Colliery 'Clog and Legging' level in 1910. These were the people who worked here six days a week. Note the men holding lighted candles. One only has to take a glance at this photograph to see that no one here was suffering from obesity! Note the man top row second from the right, no fat on this poor chap, and much the same can be said for everyone else. These hard grafting people were earning their living from the sweat of their brows. Young boys were hard at it also, unfortunately, the photo is not very clear on the bottom right, for there can be seen a boy of no more than 12 years. I wonder if Mr. Jones the photographer realised when he took this shot what a wonderful example of the men and boys of these hard-working people he had captured. Undoubtedly, these miners were called out of their work-places to one of the widest places in the mine to have this picture taken. This would have been on a 'Parting' where two roads or tunnels met. The reason for mentioning this is the opportunity to see some of the timberings these men had erected, to support the roof and side-walls. Also, it seemed it was the 'Order of the Day' for most men to have a large mustache!
